Review by Stephen Goode, of Hifi Gear.
We recently took delivery of the Speaker 2 Go from Loewe, so I decided to have a sit down and take note of my thoughts on the product, which makes use of high-quality Bluetooth, a 3.5mm jack lead connect (with lead included), and a USB port for charging your phone/USB device. It's small in stature... But huge in sound.
The first thing to note about Loewe's Speaker 2 Go is its compact size. While being aesthetically delicate, it feels firm and sturdy when being held in one hand. The buttons are quite large on the top of the speaker, and are easily visible, accessible and provide no trouble to operate. The speaker has a pop in/out rubber lift on the bottom, should you put the speaker in a low-down place; you can simply push-to-pop out and point it in a more upward direction.
Setting up the speaker to my iPhone was easy. All I had to do was push the Bluetooth icon on the speaker for about 3 seconds before being greeted with a 'beep' and seeing the speaker pop up in the Bluetooth menu of my iPhone. I then sat down to see how it compared sonically to other iPod/iPhone speakers I have used in the past.
I was immediately blown away by the exceptional clarity and detail present in Ben Howard's 'Old Pine'. You hear him delicately tapping the strings of his guitar and sense his hands move along them with each gentle string-squeak being picked up and amplified by the speaker. The mix is delivered excellently; no particular sonic element is louder, or quieter than it should be. The vocal harmonies furthered my impression, as you could hear each voice individually and could properly have counted how many vocalists/tracks were present for that particular element.
I then flipped to Ed Sheeran's 'Family' which features South-London grime artist 'P. Money'. Ed Sheeran's voice and minimal harmonisation behind it were truly brought across by the Speaker 2 Go. A heavy bass drop is shortly followed, which the speaker admittedly had some trouble reaching the depth of. Placing the speaker in to a corner boosted bass to an extent and definitely improved the sound quality; however the speaker was still not quite able to reach the depths of bass present in this particular song.
Finally, I played Miike Snow's 'Animal'. The speaker had no trouble with the mid-range or higher frequencies and vocal representation was clear, detailed and smooth. Some of the bassier elements of the chorus still lacked initial 'oomph' and the various notes of the kick-drum are not as easily recognised as when being played through other wireless speakers.
However, none of the wireless speakers I have personally listened through have been this small in size, entirely wireless and sound this good. The Speaker 2Go is an exceptional piece of equipment, and does an exceptional job of being an entirely portable sound system with audiophile quality. While it's true it does lack those bassier moments one would miss when listening extensively - its true aim is to be a semi-outdoor, portable speaker, where perhaps those listen-close-to-hear moments are less important. It fills an outdoor/open space too, the Loewe Speaker 2 Go can go phenomenally loud for what it is. A definite must have for any BBQ, picnic outside or spring-clean inside; take it with you to each room!
