Monitor Audio Silver 500s - the flagship of the range, nothing but pure enjoyment in our eyes, quite possibly one of the best-sounding floorstanding speakers at this price point. They stand rather tall, so space is something you may want to take into consideration as they are rather large speakers. As before, we have had a lot of experience when it comes to listening to all of the Silver range and as always, this is a real eye-opener, they are more power-hungry so an amp with a bit of grunt would be ideal to get these speakers to their optimum but once you have that sweet spot, they really do come to life.

Like all the products in the Silver range, the Silver 500's fits seamlessly into any listening environment with some new finishes to choose from, I have put a description of each new change added to the Silver 7G range, this was taken from the resources provided.

New RST II driver design

New RST II cone profile Monitor Audio's new RST II pattern has evolved to give a more rigid profile with a new hexagonal dimpled structure, derived from the RDT II driver development of the Platinum II series. RST II is more than just a pattern on the cone. It represents a collection of technologies, a new cone geometry profile that improves the performance of the driver at higher frequencies, an improvement to C-CAM technology and a glimpse at the underlying design elements that are not usually visible.

New RST II mid-range

Building on the work conducted for the Gold 5G series, Monitor Audio has developed a new mid-range for the Silver 7G series. The mid-range follows the same design aims: to improve directivity through the use of a compact design and to maximise the bandwidth of the driver to allow a smooth crossover with the tweeter. Together all this technology can be seen as RST II – an optimised cone geometry with a hexagon reinforcement pattern that delivers smooth and low distortion midrange.

New real wood veneers

Natural Walnut - Lighter than previous Monitor Audio walnut veneers allowing the natural colours of the grain to be more visible and will allow for easier matching with modern walnut furniture.
Ash - Light wood with more global appeal for those wishing to achieve a ‘Scandinavian look’ and a much more neutral colour to many light wood veneers offered by other loudspeaker manufacturers.

Who is Monitor Audio?

Started in 1972 by the charismatic Mo Iqbal, Monitor Audio began loudspeaker design and production using tried and tested methods available at that time - plastic cone materials, fabric dome tweeters and reflex-loaded braced cabinets. The speakers were welcomed by enthusiasts both in the UK and throughout the World.

Following a management buyout in the 1980s, over the next decade, Monitor Audio expanded its speaker ranges into stereo, surround and in-ceiling/ in-wall plus outdoor speakers to meet the needs of a more diverse, emerging market. At the same time, it embraced metal C-CAM driver technology which can respond to audio signals more faithfully than traditional materials, thanks to its inherent strength and rigidity.

The current Monitor Audio range of speakers is a very successful line-up including the entry-level Bronze range, the mid-market Silver series using C-CAM drivers, the new Gold range delivering high-end performance and lastly the Platinum II range for those buyers who do not wish to compromise sound quality.
