Naim NAIT 5si integrated amplifier

Naim Audio has a special place in British audio, thanks to its founder and inspirational leader Julian Vereker, a hugely talented mechanical and electronic engineer with a passion for, amongst many things, music. Founded in 1973, Naim has always had a firm philosophy of music first, measurements second - each Naim product is extensively auditioned as part of the product development process to make sure that it delivers clear, emotional music-making ability. Naim products are designed to bring the closest facsimile of a live music event into your home listening environment, to give you maximum pleasure from your music collection.

For those music lovers wanting a compact, high-performance integrated amplifier of moderate power output but great flexibility, look no further than the Naim Nait 5si. The Naim Nait range has always been associated with excellent sound quality at an affordable price, and the latest 5si design continues that tradition.

Power output is a real-world 60W per channel, up from 50W of the previous model, capable of driving most speakers, even those designs with lower impedance. Five analogue line level inputs are provided for CD, Tape loop, Tuner and AV which have a pass-through through our unity gain aspect to allow the front left and right channels of your surround sound to be handled by the Nait 5si. A front panel 6.35mm socket enables you to connect your headphones easily. All inputs are via phono sockets, and both the CD and Tuner inputs can be connected via 5-pin DIN for the best possible sound quality and ground integrity.

Internally, build quality and the component choice are to the usual high Naim standards, featuring oversized low noise/hum Talema toroidal transformer, quad BHC 10000uF reservoir smoothing capacitors for dynamic, engaging sound quality and surface mount components enabling short signal paths and minimal wiring. Each input is electronically isolated via wet contact reed relays hermetically sealed in a dual-in-line package, avoiding contact contamination over time.

Control of the Nait 5si is simplified by the infrared remote control supplied, which allows input selection and volume adjustment from the comfort of your listening position. Aesthetically the zinc/ aluminium diecast casework is finished in a matte black finish, giving an attractive, understated appearance. A perfect match to the Naim CD5si CD player, the combination is capable of very enjoyable music-making in union with your choice of quality loudspeakers.

The CD5Si CD Player

Despite the popularity of streaming, for many audiophiles, the CD as a music format is their first choice when listening at home, and the Naim CD5Si CD player has been designed to extract a thorough music performance from this well-loved music carrier. The familiar and unique Naim swing-out CD loader is present of course with new laser optics and transport, but it is the electronics where great improvements have been made over its predecessor.

At the heart of the upgrades is the addition of a 24bit Burr Brown PCM1793 DAC which combines a highly precise stereo conversion process with less dependence upon clock jitter to achieve a low distortion output. In parallel with this, the power supply has been updated and better regulated for a more dynamic musical presentation, whilst a re-designed discrete component analogue filter and output stage provide the perfect interface to interconnects and amplifier inputs.

One thing that has not changed is the diecast alloy casework - classic in the matte black finish, this enclosure not only looks beautiful, but also protects the internal circuitry from both electromagnetic interferences, and also airborne feedback which would adversely affect sound quality. An unusual but effective swing drawer CD loader is actually a very convenient and tactile way to load the CD, complete with a magnetic puck to be placed over the CD's central hole.

Moving from the left-hand side of the front fascia to the middle section is Naim's classic semi-circular logo with soft green backlighting, which contrasts well with the black casework, but is never distracting - the look is technical and understated. Further to the right is seven segments led display to show the track number, pause, repeat and program, and a series of four backlit push buttons which allow control over CD replay - previous track, next track, stop and play. All of these functions are repeated on the handheld remote control.

The rear panel is home to the on/off rocker switch and 3-pin IEC mains inlet socket, allowing you the opportunity to upgrade to an aftermarket mains lead of your choice - we have tried the affordable Chord C-Power with great sonic results. Two methods of audio output connection are available, the more convenient phono RCA sockets which will interface to all manufacturer's equipment, or Naim's preferred 5-pin DIN socket which is ideal to connect to a matching Naim pre-amplifier or integrated amplifier.

The CD5Si is the perfect partner to the matching Naim Nait 5si amplifier, and together they form the basis of a supremely musical, dynamic and enjoyable home music system.
