Naim Audio NDX 2 Network Streamer

Overview

The NDX 2 uses Naim's new innovative streaming platform. Some of the key features on the NDX 2 is a streaming, AirPlay, built-in Chromecast, Bluetooth (apt x HD), Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Roon compatibility, Internet Radio and multi-room streaming - alongside digital and USB inputs for conventional connections; this makes the NDX 2 one the most versatile streamers to match Naim's integrated amplifiers. Naim's main focus when it came to developing the NDX 2 was performance. Along with Naim's bespoke streaming platform, the developers have added an upgraded DAC and discrete analogue stages. These and other numerous tweaks made the NDX 2 highly immersive and gave off powerful replay quality.

The Technology & Craft

The streaming section of the NDX 2 uses Naim's latest network card which features low-noise, high-speed low voltage differential signalling to route the digital audio signal. The benefits of having such high-speed signalling are that it makes it capable of decoding all HD audio formats up to 32 bits/384kHz or DSD128. The Data is integer-over-sampled in a SHARC DSP to an outstanding 40-bit accuracy before it's fed to the PCM1791A Burr-Brown digital-to-analogue converter. The development of the new streaming platform was one of Naim's biggest projects, three years it took to create a system that could make the most of online services such as TIDAL, and Spotify whilst adding future-proof flexibility through Chromecast built-in. Along with Naim's bespoke streaming platform, the developers have added an upgraded DAC and discrete analogue stages.

Naim App

The Nova can be controlled via Naim's app. Once loaded, there will be a 'Rooms' page, find the Nova and you are then ready to browse. The app will come with Tidal (a high-resolution streaming app), giving you the ability to search for any song you desire. If streaming songs aren't your personal preference, you can browse over hundreds of internet radio stations or if you've already got a Spotify account, you can use Spotify Connect to the Atom and listen to all your songs from any playlist.

Who is Naim?

Naim Audio has a special place in British audio, thanks to its founder and inspirational leader Julian Vereker, a hugely talented mechanical and electronic engineer with a passion for, amongst many things, music. Founded in 1973, Naim has always had a firm philosophy of music first, measurements second - each Naim product is extensively auditioned as part of the product development process to make sure that it delivers clear, emotional music-making ability.

Naim products are designed to bring the closest facsimile of a live music event into your home listening environment, to give you maximum pleasure from your music collection. Many of the Naim products are evolutions of previous designs, incorporating sometimes quite small changes to the mechanical or electronic design - however, these incremental changes make a large overall improvement in the musical performance of each product.

Naim Supernait 3 Integrated Amplifier

It's been 6 years since the Naim SUPERNAIT 2 was launched and in that time the development team at Naim have been hard at work on a number of improvements to bring to the new SUPERNAIT. The SUPERNAIT 3 raises the bar again by introducing a number of performance upgrades, the biggest being an integrated phono stage making it the perfect one-box solution for turntable fans. The new phono stage is based on Naim's classic design and features a 3 stage process, the gain stage, passive equalisation and then the final gain and active equalisation, this gives great headroom, RIAA equalisation & noise performance.

The SUPERNAIT 3 includes a Class A preamp output stage that doubles as a headphone amplifier and ceramic heatsink technology that minimises capacitive coupling between the chassis and output transistors for optimum sound quality. Its inputs are each individually decoupled and hand-wired to minimise noise and interference while internal switching employs ultra-low-noise, constant current sources which are derived directly from the electronic design of the flagship NAC 552 preamplifier.

The Naim Supernait 3 is an incredibly capable amplifier and pairs well with a lot of speakers, both new and old. A favourite in the shop is the Twenty5i series from PMC. Whether you are looking for a small bookshelf like the Twenty5 21i or a compact floor stander like the Twenty5 23i, you will get a remarkable level of imaging with a depth of detail, mid and bass you would normally expect from a much larger speaker. If you would like to hear either of these combos, or any other speaker we stock on our demo Supernait 3, just let us know at 01432 354921 or email info@hifigear.co.uk
