Project Phono Box S2 Ultra

The Phono Box S2 Ultra is one of Project's newest additions to their 'Box Design' series. This phono stage has a lot of bang for its buck, standing in line with quite a few higher-priced ones. It replaces the popular Phono Box DS and DS+ models, yet still manages to boast an array of features for easy pairing with any modern cartridge to this date.

The Phono Box S2 Ultra ultra utilises a complete discrete electronic layout without the use of any operational amplifiers (op-amps). Op-amps are normally found in other various phono stages to increase the quiet sound that is generated from a pickup cartridge to a level that more modern amplifiers use. Moving away from the older technology used by Project, they are now able to produce a new device that is able to produce a warm, harmonious sound. In addition to all this new technology, the use of polystyrene capacitors makes the Phono Box S2 Ultra almost unique on the market, as such components are normally reserved for far more expensive products. Elsewhere, the split RIAA equalisation circuit enables pinpoint accuracy of the RIAA curve and the introduction of a subsonic filter ensures your music sounds right in any environment.

The Phono Box S2 Ultra delivers a true audiophile sound performance that belies its small form and attractive price. With a sonic signature that delivers the full beauty of a vinyl record, it also remains easy to set up. With a series of dip-switches on the bottom of the solid metal casework, there are multiple settings for impedance (MC), capacitance (MM) and gain – so any modern Moving Magnet or Moving Coil cartridge is easy to accommodate.

Who is Project?

Project started in the hifi business designing and manufacturing affordable stereo turntables in the early 1990s, beginning with the entry-level Debut model. It was a great success, like all other turntables on the market at that time were at least  £100 more expensive, without offering a performance benefit. Project has gone on to extend the range of turntables they offer at all popular price points and performance levels, through midrange to high-end models.
