Project Xtension 10 Turntable
The Xtension 10 Evolution from Project is an ideal solution for someone seeking the premium sound quality of the prestigious Xtension but requires a sleeker design. The Xtension 10 Evolution is a compact size, less than 48cm in width, and has been designed to fit comfortably in standard hifi audio racks. Incorporating Project's 20 years of turntable-design experience, the Xtension 10 Evolution has been engineered with the same precise level of attention to detail one would expect from any product built by a premium turntable brand like Project.
The chassis is built from a formula of MDF filled with metal sand to give the unit a hefty and durable mass, reducing unwanted resonance and other vibration sounds either caused by the machine or the machines around it. The Xtension 10 Evolution utilises magnetic feet, which separate the main plinth of the turntable from the base of the turntable. These two elements create a total turntable mass of 22kg.
As opposed to the commonly used adoption of pure metal used for the main platter of the unit, Project has developed what they say is the 'perfect alloy', damped on the inner side with a patented chemical called Sorbothane, which is used to industrial (usually premium sports products) level shock absorbency. They've also formed the perfect mat for the platter, made from recycled vinyl records glued together. The end product is consequently a resonance-free, durable weighted platter, that runs ultra-silently on an inverted ceramic ball bearing with magnetised suspension.
The Project 10cc Evolution tonearm is also isolated from the mainboard by a sheet of super-shock-absorbing Sorbothane. The tonearm can be used in conjunction with a variety of different top-quality phono cartridges, ranging from 4g in weight to 14g. Also provided is a set of 4 separate Sorbothane-damped Counterweights. The Xtension 10 Evolution also comes with an aesthetically pleasing dustcover, with the option of a range of equally aesthetically beautiful, high gloss lacquer finishes; mahogany, piano and olive.
Who is Project?
Project started in the hifi business designing and manufacturing affordable stereo turntables in the early 1990s, beginning with the entry-level Debut model. It was a great success, like all other turntables on the market at that time were at least £100 more expensive, without offering a performance benefit. Project has gone on to extend the range of turntables they offer at all popular price points and performance levels, through midrange to high-end models.
